Luka Doncic, Kristaps Porzingis to miss Mavs’ preseason finale vs. Bucks for rest

Luka Doncic, Kristaps Porzingis and Tim Hardaway Jr. are finished with preseason play.

The three Mavericks starters will sit out Friday night’s preseason finale against the Bucks to rest, the team announced Thursday afternoon in its pregame media notes.

Reggie Bullock and Tyrell Terry also remain away from the team for personal reasons.

Doncic, Porzingis and Hardaway played in the first three exhibitions, including Wednesday night’s 68-point thrashing of the Hornets.

In Charlotte, coach Jason Kidd planned to treat the outing like a dress rehearsal for the regular season, which will start Oct. 21 in Atlanta for the Mavericks. He wanted Doncic and Porzingis to play into the fourth quarter after participating in only the first halves of the first two preseason games.

But with the Mavericks leading by 50 at the end of the third quarter, Kidd elected to sit his top players for the final period.

That didn’t change his plan for Friday’s rotation, though, because the Mavericks practiced Thursday in Milwaukee.

“Those guys didn’t get a chance to play in the fourth quarter like we planned, so we made the adjustment,” Kidd said after the game Wednesday. “That’s nice that we can come back [Thursday] and have a healthy, energized practice where everybody’s going to participate.

“And then we stay to the script. Those guys won’t play in Milwaukee, and so we’ll go from there.”

Instead, watch for the Mavericks on the roster bubble to have their final live action before the NBA’s Monday afternoon deadline for teams to cut their preseason rosters of 20 players to 15 for the regular season.

The Mavericks are one of 10 teams who started training camp with 16 players on guaranteed contracts, not including two-way and Exhibition 10 rookie deals.
