After a few months of back and forth, it is confirmed there will be a baseball season this summer. The deal is in place for the MLB to have a 60 game season that will start at the end of July. Now it is time to get to business. With a shortened season these teams have to make every game count. It is a different way of playing a season this time around. Here are my top 5 MLB teams for the shortened 2020 season.
5- Washington Nationals
Of course the Nationals are coming off a World Series win so they are still hot. They were able to re-sign Stephen Strasburg to a seven-year $245 million contract. Ryan Zimmerman, Howie Kendrick, and Asdrubal Cabrera were all re-signed to the team. The only big loss the Nationals had was Anthony Rendon who signed with the Angels for a seven-year $245 million contract. With only one big loss to the team and all the re-signings and new additions, there is a possibility that the Nationals will make it back to the World Series and defend their title.
4- Atlanta Braves
The Braves are a strong team as they have been able to win back-to-back NL East titles. They have a strong consistent team and there is no reason why they can’t return and make it three back-to-back NL East titles. The new addition to the team, veteran Cole Hamels was injuried during spring training but since the delay of the season, he is expected to play at the seasons start in July. Cole Hamels has years of postseason experience to help guide the rest of the young team along. Cristian Pache, Drew Waters and Ian Anderson, all made the Braves roster.
3- Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays are equipped with an overall great team. Last season they went to the American League Division Series against the Houston Astros. This offseason they added two strong batters in Yoshitomo Tsutsugo from Japan and Hunter Renfroe from San Diego. With the trade for Renfroe, the Rays lost Tommy Pham, which was a questionable decision at first glance. However, with an even stronger offence the sky is the limit for the Rays.
2- New York Yankees
The New York Yankees are a powerful team. Last season despite a long list of injuries, they were able to win 103 games. With this season being delayed, there was more time to heal so hopefully there will be some stronger and healthier players ready to go in July. The pandemic gave Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton more time to heal and both of these great players will be starting training camp in a few days. A great addition to the team is the 29-year old pitcher Gerrit Cole. Cole signed a nine-year $324 million contract. In the American League, the Yankees are the team to beat.
1- Los Angeles Dodgers
The Yankees are the team to beat in the American League, and the Dodgers are the team to beat in the National League. The most notable trade during the offseason was with the Boston Red Sox for Mookie Betts, one of the greatest players in the game. Despite being one of the newest member so the team, Betts is the most important player they have. Betts alongside Cody Bellinger, Justin Turner, Clayton Kershaw, this Dodgers team looks nearly unstoppable. Last season the Dodgers had the best record in the league. They have won seven straight National League titles. This season doesn’t look like it will be much different.
